Dublin 4-day itinerary: city highlights plus Cliffs of Moher

Four days: city depth plus Ireland’s most dramatic coastline
Four days in Dublin allows you to cover the city properly and take the most photogenic day trip in Ireland. The Cliffs of Moher — 214-metre sea cliffs dropping straight into the Atlantic on the west coast — are a full day from Dublin (about 13 hours including travel), which is why they belong in a 4-day itinerary rather than a rushed add-on to a short break.
This itinerary does not require a car. All day trips use organised transport from Dublin city centre.
Day 1: old city, cathedrals and Guinness
Morning: Trinity College and the medieval core
Start at Trinity College at opening. Book online for the fast-track Book of Kells and Dublin Castle tour — it combines two major sights in a single morning and the guide context adds real value. The Long Room of the Old Library is a genuinely extraordinary room; the Book of Kells itself requires about 20 minutes at the light box. Allow 75 minutes total.
Walk west through Dame Street, past Dublin Castle (free courtyard), and into the Liberties.
Late morning: Christ Church and St Patrick’s
Christ Church Cathedral was founded by the Viking King Sitriuc in 1030 and rebuilt by the Normans — the crypt is one of the oldest intact structures in Dublin. St Patrick’s Cathedral is a 10-minute walk south: larger, lighter, and where Jonathan Swift was dean for 30 years.
Afternoon: Guinness Storehouse
Lunch in the Liberties, then the Guinness Storehouse is 15 minutes on foot west of St Patrick’s. A Guinness Storehouse entry ticket includes the seven-floor self-guided experience and a rooftop pint — book to skip the queue. Allow 2 hours.
Evening: Temple Bar and first pub
Explore Temple Bar for the atmosphere, but drink in the quieter pubs south of Dame Street or on the Fleet Street side. The traditional pub walking tour at 19:30 is a well-organised evening — a guide takes you to three or four neighbourhood pubs with live music.
Day 2: Georgian Dublin, northside and Kilmainham
Morning: Georgian Dublin and the national museums
Start in Georgian Dublin with the free National Museum on Kildare Street (Irish gold, Viking finds, the Bog Bodies). Merrion Square’s gardens open from 08:00 — it is worth 20 minutes to walk the perimeter and look at the brightly painted Georgian doorways.
A 3-hour history walking tour from College Green at 10:00 covers the Georgian city and the revolutionary northside with a guide — the right choice if you like narrative context.
Late morning: northside history
Cross the Liffey to the O’Connell Street and northside area. The GPO Museum tells the 1916 Easter Rising story powerfully; the EPIC Irish Emigration Museum in the Docklands is the best museum in Dublin and covers Irish emigration with exceptional production values.
Afternoon: Kilmainham Gaol
The Kilmainham Gaol is 20 minutes from the city centre on the Luas Red Line. This is where the Easter Rising leaders were executed in the stonebreaker’s yard; the guided tour is essential, not optional — book weeks in advance in summer. Allow 90 minutes.
Evening: neighbourhood dinner and session
End the evening in Smithfield, which sits between Kilmainham and the city centre. Cobblestone pub here has a genuine trad session most evenings, genuinely packed with locals. The Dublin pub crawl guide has the full run-down of areas and options.
Day 3: Wicklow day trip
Full-day: Wicklow Mountains and Glendalough
Day 3 is your Wicklow day. The Wicklow Mountains and the ancient monastic city of Glendalough represent the best short day trip from Dublin. The Wild Wicklow Mountains and Glendalough tour departs Dublin at approximately 10:30, covers Powerscourt Waterfall, the Sally Gap mountain road, and the sixth-century monastery at Glendalough — with its two lakes and 33-metre round tower — before returning to Dublin by 19:00.
This is genuinely the best one-day escape from the city. If you prefer to go independently (requires a car), read the Wicklow Glendalough day trip guide for the self-drive route and hiking options.
Evening: rest or city exploration
After a full day in Wicklow, a relaxed dinner near your hotel is usually the right call. The area around Ranelagh (20 minutes south of the centre by Luas) has an excellent neighbourhood restaurant scene at lower prices than the city centre.
Day 4: Cliffs of Moher
Full-day: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren
This is the long day — buses depart Dublin at approximately 07:30–08:00 and return around 20:00–21:00. The journey west takes about three hours each way, so you have roughly six to seven hours on the coast. A Cliffs of Moher full-day tour from Dublin typically stops at the Burren (a vast limestone plateau with prehistoric tombs) and the cliffs themselves, where the Visitor Centre and cliff walk reveal the 214-metre drop to the Atlantic.
Many tours also pass through Galway City briefly — a quick walk through the medieval lanes and the Spanish Arch. See the Cliffs of Moher day trip guide and the Galway day trip guide for context on what to expect.
Honest note on the cliffs: they are spectacular but can be misty, windy, and crowded in peak season. The view from the edge — when you get it — justifies every minute of the journey. The Visitor Centre is worth 20–30 minutes; the cliff walk north towards Hag’s Head is the best way to get away from the main crowd.
