How long is the Cliffs of Moher day trip from Dublin?
Approximately 13 hours return. Tours typically depart Dublin around 07:00–07:30 and return by 20:00–20:30. The Cliffs themselves take about 1.5–2 hours; the rest is travel and stops at the Burren and optionally Galway. Book an organised tour — driving yourself is possible but a long day.
What the Cliffs of Moher actually are
The Cliffs of Moher rise 214 metres above the Atlantic at their highest point and run for 8 kilometres along the Clare coastline in County Clare. They are the most visited natural attraction in Ireland, and the reason is obvious from the first sight: the scale, the colour — black shale and sandstone streaked with orange lichen — and the sound of Atlantic swell hitting the base 200 metres below.
O’Brien’s Tower stands at the highest point, built as a viewing tower in 1835. The cliff path runs both north and south from the visitor centre. On a clear day, the Aran Islands are visible to the west and the mountains of Connemara to the north. On a foggy day — which is perhaps a third of days in summer — visibility can be near zero and the cliffs are effectively invisible from the path.
This guide covers the day trip specifically: how to get there from Dublin, what to expect, and which tour to book.
How to get there from Dublin
Organised day tour (recommended for most visitors)
The drive from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher is approximately 220 km each way, mostly on the M18 motorway through Limerick. Driving independently takes about 2.5–3 hours each way. An organised tour removes the navigation, provides context at every stop, and typically includes time at the Burren that independent drivers rarely spend long enough at.
The Cliffs of Moher full-day tour from Dublin is the most direct option: depart around 07:00, reach the Cliffs mid-morning when the light is typically best, stop at the Burren limestone plateau, and return to Dublin by around 20:00–20:30.
For those who want to add Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, Burren and Galway City day tour adds about 1.5 hours in Galway — enough for lunch and a walk through the Latin Quarter. This is arguably the better route because Galway adds human interest to what is otherwise a natural scenery day.
For a more intimate experience, the Cliffs of Moher small-group tour from Dublin caps groups at around 16 passengers rather than the standard 50-seat coaches — significantly better if you care about being able to hear the guide and reach the quieter sections of the cliff path.
Boat cruise option
The Cliffs of Moher tour with boat cruise adds a short boat trip departing from Doolin, which gives an entirely different perspective from sea level — the caves, the sea stack at Branaunmore and the vertical scale that you can’t appreciate from above. Weather-dependent (the boat trip is cancelled in rough seas) but excellent when it runs.
Driving independently
If you prefer to drive: take the M7/M18 from Dublin to Ennis, then the N85 west toward Ennistymon and on to the R478 to the visitor centre. The final approach is a single-track road in places. Parking at the visitor centre costs €8–€10 per car. Fuel and tolls add to the cost; a one-way journey takes about 2.5–3 hours.
The advantage of driving is flexibility — you can time your arrival for early morning (before 09:00, when the coach tours haven’t arrived) or stay until the late afternoon. The visitor centre opens at 09:00.
What to expect at the Cliffs
The visitor centre
The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience is a partially underground centre built into the hillside, with exhibits on the geology, ecology and history of the cliffs. Admission is €8–€10 (check current prices). It is worth 30 minutes; most of the time at the Cliffs should be spent on the path.
The cliff paths
Two signed paths run from the visitor centre: north toward O’Brien’s Tower (about 1 km) and south toward Hag’s Head (about 4 km). The northern path to O’Brien’s Tower and back takes about 45 minutes and is the minimum recommended if time is short. The longer southern path follows the full length of the accessible cliffs and gives the best views back toward the tower.
The paths are unfenced in places, particularly the southern section. The drop is sheer. Stay on the marked path and behind the barriers where they exist. Wind can be very strong.
Timing
1.5 hours is the minimum; 2 hours is comfortable for both paths. On busy summer days (June–August), the areas immediately around O’Brien’s Tower are crowded from about 11:00. Arriving before 10:00 or after 14:00 makes a noticeable difference.
Weather
Summer fog is common. The best weather at the Cliffs statistically occurs May and September, with long evenings and lower visitor numbers. July–August have the most visitors and the most fog. A clear-day visit is significantly better than a foggy one; the GYG tours run regardless of weather, so check the forecast before departure day and, if fog is forecast, consider rescheduling.
The Burren
Most Cliffs of Moher day tours stop at the Burren en route — a 250 km² karst plateau of limestone pavements, caves and exceptionally diverse wildflowers. It looks like the surface of the moon at first glance; closer inspection reveals orchids, gentians and the stone walls of ancient field systems. Allow 20–30 minutes; guides on organised tours are often excellent here, explaining the geology and the rare flora.
What’s included and what costs extra
Most standard tours include:
- Coach transport from Dublin (central pickup)
- Bilingual guide throughout
- Time at the Burren
- 1.5–2 hours at the Cliffs of Moher
Usually not included:
- Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre admission (~€8–€10)
- Meals and refreshments
- Galway free time expenses
Tours that include Galway allow free time there — typically 1.5 hours — for lunch and shopping. The cost of lunch in Galway (€12–€20 for a casual restaurant) should be factored into the day.
Combining with other destinations
Cliffs + Galway: Covered above — the standard extension. Galway is covered in detail in the Galway day trip guide.
Cliffs + Aran Islands: A 2-day option — spend the night in Galway, take the ferry to Inis Mór or Inis Oírr from Rossaveel the following morning. Not a single day trip from Dublin but an excellent extension.
Cliffs + Connemara: Too much for one day from Dublin. Connemara is best approached from a Galway base.

Frequently asked questions about Cliffs of Moher day trip guide
Can you do the Cliffs of Moher as a day trip from Dublin?
Yes, but it is a long day — about 13 hours door to door. Organised tours depart Dublin early (around 07:00) and return in the evening. Driving independently is also possible but means 4–4.5 hours each way. The organised tour removes the navigation stress and gives you a guide for the Burren and cliffs. What is included in a Cliffs of Moher day tour from Dublin?
Most standard tours include coach transport, a bilingual guide, a stop at the Burren limestone landscape, and 1.5–2 hours at the Cliffs of Moher. Some tours also include time in Galway City. The visitor centre admission (€8–€10) is sometimes included, sometimes paid separately — check before booking. What is the best tour for the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin?

Yes, for the scenery — the 214-metre drop to the Atlantic is genuinely spectacular. Fog is common (about 1 day in 3 in summer), which can reduce visibility. There is no shelter from wind at the cliff edge. If you go on a clear day, it is one of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe. See the Cliffs of Moher guide for more detail. What currency do you use at the Cliffs of Moher?
EUR. The Cliffs of Moher are in County Clare, Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland (Giant's Causeway, Belfast) uses GBP.Can you combine the Cliffs of Moher with Galway in one day?
Yes — this is one of the most popular combinations. Tours typically stop at the Cliffs for 1.5 hours and then allow 1.5–2 hours in Galway city before the return drive to Dublin. It makes for a 13-hour day but covers two of Ireland's most distinctive destinations.
