How do you visit Newgrange from Dublin?
Join an organised day tour (8 hours, depart 08:30) or drive yourself to the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre in Donore, about 50 km north of Dublin (1 hour's drive). All visits to Newgrange are by guided tour from the visitor centre — you cannot enter independently. Book passage tomb admission well in advance; summer slots sell out weeks ahead.
Newgrange: older than the pyramids
Newgrange was built around 3200 BC. That is approximately 600 years before the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza, and 1,000 years before Stonehenge. The people who built it carried enormous carved stones — some from the Mourne Mountains 70 km away — and assembled a precisely engineered structure oriented to capture the winter solstice sunrise. On 21 December each year, a shaft of light through the roof-box above the entrance penetrates 19 metres to the chamber and illuminates the carved spirals on the back wall for 17 minutes.
We don’t know who built it. The Neolithic people of Ireland left no written records. What they left is one of the most significant prehistoric monuments in the world, and one that raises more questions the longer you stand in it.
As a day trip from Dublin — 50 km north on good roads — it is among the most compelling short excursions you can take.
How to visit Newgrange
The booking situation
All visits to Newgrange passage tomb are by guided tour from the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre. You cannot walk up to the mound independently. Tours depart from the visitor centre and cross the River Boyne by footbridge.
Book in advance at heritageireland.ie. In July–August, slots sell out several weeks ahead. Winter solstice entry is by lottery (apply in November); you will not get this on a day trip unless you won the lottery. Off-peak months (October–April) are far easier to book.
The visitor centre admission (exhibits, film, access to the outer mound) is around €5; the passage tomb guided tour adds about €8–€10. Organised day tours from Dublin usually include both.
Brú na Bóinne complex
Newgrange is part of a larger complex — Brú na Bóinne (Palace of the Boyne) — that includes the Knowth and Dowth passage tombs. The Knowth mound is visited separately (it has the largest collection of megalithic art in western Europe); Dowth is not currently open for interior visits. The visitor centre covers all three.
Getting there from Dublin
Organised day tour
The Boyne Valley with Newgrange and Brú na Bóinne entry tour is the most direct option: depart Dublin around 09:00, transport to the visitor centre, guided passage tomb tour, and return by afternoon. About €45 including admission. Typically 7–8 hours.
For a broader Boyne Valley experience, the Newgrange, Trim Castle and Hill of Tara tour adds Ireland’s largest Norman castle and the ceremonial hilltop that served as the seat of the High Kings. About 8–9 hours; €35.
The Newgrange, Monasterboice and Hill of Tara day tour swaps Trim Castle for Monasterboice — a monastic site with two of Ireland’s finest high crosses, dating from the 10th century. About €35.
For the richest historical coverage, the Celtic Boyne Valley and ancient sites tour covers the full prehistoric landscape — Newgrange, the Hill of Tara, and additional sites. About €38; a full 10-hour day.
Driving independently
Take the M1 north from Dublin, exit at Junction 9 (Drogheda South), and follow signs for Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre. About 50–55 minutes depending on traffic. Parking at the visitor centre is free. Book passage tomb access in advance; if you arrive without a booking you may be able to get a same-day slot at the visitor centre desk (not guaranteed in summer).
Bus
Bus Éireann operates services from Dublin Busáras to Drogheda (approximately 1 hour), from where you can take a local bus or taxi to the visitor centre (about 10 minutes). Less convenient than driving or an organised tour but feasible.
What to see at the Boyne Valley
Newgrange passage tomb
The inner passage is stone-lined and about 19 metres long, ending in a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof that has stayed dry for over 5,000 years. The carved spirals and lozenge patterns on the stones — particularly the entrance stone — are among the finest examples of Neolithic art in Europe.
The guided tour takes about 1 hour. The guide demonstrates the solstice effect using artificial lighting — a remarkably affecting moment even knowing it is simulated.
Photography: flash is not permitted inside the tomb. The guide will tell you when and where you can photograph.
The Hill of Tara
The Hill of Tara is a grassy hilltop in County Meath with earthworks dating from Neolithic times through the Iron Age. It was the symbolic seat of the High Kings of Ireland — Cormac mac Airt (3rd century AD), Conn of the Hundred Battles, Niall of the Nine Hostages — and the ceremonial heart of pre-Norman Ireland. The views extend across the midlands of Ireland.
There are no visitor centre charges; the site is freely accessible, though a Heritage Ireland guide on site in summer provides context. Allow 45 minutes.
Trim Castle
Trim Castle on the River Boyne is the largest Norman castle in Ireland — built by Hugh de Lacy from 1172. A substantial ruin with a keep, two baileys and curtain walls. Admission about €5; guided tours of the keep available. About 1 hour.
Monasterboice
Monasterboice is a small monastic site with two of Ireland’s finest carved high crosses — Muiredach’s Cross (10th century), widely considered the finest high cross in Ireland, with biblical scenes carved across its entire surface. The round tower beside it is 9th century. Free entry; no visitor centre. Allow 30–45 minutes.
Combining Newgrange with other day trips
Newgrange is a half-day excursion if you drive independently; a full day if you add Hill of Tara and Trim Castle. It pairs well with a morning in Dublin before heading north, or with the Dublin Northern Ireland 3-day itinerary as an intermediate stop.
