Booking Dublin attractions in advance: what, when and why
Dublin: the Dublin Pass with tickets to 40+ attractions
Duration: 1-5 days
- Free cancellation
- Instant confirmation
Which Dublin attractions need to be booked in advance?
Book Kilmainham Gaol as soon as you know your dates — it genuinely sells out weeks ahead. Book the Guinness Storehouse online to save money and skip the ticket queue. Day trips to the Cliffs of Moher, Belfast and Wicklow can fill up in summer. Most other attractions can be handled on the day, though online booking is usually cheaper.
Why advance booking matters in Dublin
Dublin is a compact city where visitor numbers concentrate heavily in summer (June–August) and around key dates (St Patrick’s Day in March, bank holiday weekends). Several of the most visited attractions have limited timed-entry slots, and some sell out completely days or weeks ahead. A missed slot at Kilmainham Gaol doesn’t have a same-day fix — you’ve lost a visit.
The other reason to book online in advance is price. Almost every paid Dublin attraction offers a lower online price than the door rate. The savings range from €1–2 on smaller attractions to €5–8 on the major ones.
Use the Dublin budget calculator to estimate total attraction costs for your trip.
Essential advance bookings (do these now)
Kilmainham Gaol — book immediately
This is the single attraction in Dublin where advance booking is not optional in summer. The guided tours run at fixed intervals throughout the day; daily capacity is limited. In July and August, popular date slots can sell out 2–3 weeks ahead. The gaol doesn’t have a walk-up option as an alternative — if your slot isn’t booked, you can’t get in.
Book directly at the OPW (Office of Public Works) website. Cost is €9. No reseller is necessary.
For what to expect from the visit itself, see the Kilmainham Gaol guide.
Guinness Storehouse — book before you go
Not as urgent as Kilmainham, but there are two clear reasons to book ahead:
- Online tickets (~€26) are cheaper than door-price tickets
- Booking a timed slot means you skip the ticket-purchase queue, which can be 20–30 minutes long in summer
The Guinness Storehouse entry ticket with free pint includes the full seven-floor experience and one complimentary pint at the Gravity Bar. Book 24–48 hours ahead minimum; for summer weekends, a week ahead is safer.
Book of Kells at Trinity College — book ahead in summer
The Book of Kells and Old Library at Trinity College has timed entry slots. Queues without a booking can be 30–45 minutes in peak season. Booking online saves both money and time. Slots are less likely to sell out completely than Kilmainham, but don’t leave it to the morning of your visit in July.
Book ahead for best price (but rarely sell out)
Day trips to Wicklow and Glendalough
The most popular day trip from Dublin. The Wild Wicklow and Glendalough day tour and similar offerings from other operators run daily and often have capacity on the day — but peak summer dates and bank holiday weekends fill quickly. If you have a fixed departure date, book at least a week ahead.
See the Wicklow and Glendalough day trip guide for which tour to choose.
Cliffs of Moher day trip
The Cliffs of Moher full-day tour from Dublin (12–13 hours) is one of the most in-demand long-distance day trips. Coach capacity is limited and summer dates fill. Book at least a week ahead in high season; in July, 2 weeks is safer. The trip is a very long day — see Cliffs of Moher day trip guide for what to expect.
Belfast day trip
The day tour to Belfast and Titanic Museum involves coach plus Titanic Belfast admission. Similar advance booking advice as the Cliffs of Moher. Alternatively, taking the bus or train to Belfast independently doesn’t require any advance booking beyond the ticket (available on the day). See Dublin to Belfast transport.
Things you can usually book the same day
Most of Dublin’s major attractions can be booked online the same morning, or even at the door in low season. These include:
- Dublin Castle (State Apartments: €8)
- EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum
- Jameson Distillery
- Teeling, Roe & Co and other whiskey distilleries
- St Patrick’s Cathedral
- Dublin Zoo
- Glasnevin Cemetery tours
- Hop-on hop-off bus tours
Same-day tip: Even if an attraction is available at the door, booking online first almost always saves €1–5 and confirms availability. The five-minute booking step is always worth doing.
The Dublin Pass as a booking tool
The Dublin Pass (40+ attractions) bundles multiple attractions into one digital pass and lets you skip ticket queues at included venues. It doesn’t replace the timed-slot booking for Kilmainham Gaol — you still need to book that separately even as a pass holder. See the full Dublin Pass guide and Dublin Pass calculator to decide if the pass suits your itinerary.
St Patrick’s Day and major events: book everything months ahead
If you’re visiting for St Patrick’s Day (17 March), expect:
- Hotel prices to triple or quadruple vs normal
- All popular attractions to be pre-booked weeks to months ahead
- Some sites to close for the parade and festival (road closures affect the city centre significantly)
- Dublin to be extremely crowded
For the parade viewing spots, events and what to do, see St Patrick’s Day Dublin.
Major concerts at the 3Arena or Aviva Stadium cause similar though smaller demand spikes. If your travel dates coincide with a major event, book accommodation and popular attractions as soon as you can.
Booking platforms: what to use
OPW (opw.ie): Use for Kilmainham Gaol. The only official booking channel.
GetYourGuide: Reliable for day tours, the Guinness Storehouse, hop-on hop-off and passes. Free cancellation is standard on most Dublin listings. See the relevant guides for the correct product to book.
Direct from attraction websites: Guinness Storehouse, Book of Kells and most museums sell directly — sometimes at the same price as GetYourGuide, sometimes cheaper. Check both.
Not recommended: Reseller aggregators that mark up tickets significantly. Stick to OPW, the attraction’s own site, or GetYourGuide for confidence on pricing and cancellation.
Cancellation policies
Most Dublin attractions and tours on GetYourGuide offer free cancellation up to 24–48 hours before the visit. This means you can book ahead without risk, then cancel if plans change. Book and cancel is better than not booking at all in summer.
