Republic of Ireland vs Northern Ireland
Dublin is in the Republic of Ireland — an EU member state using the euro. Entry for most Western visitors is visa-free, and EU citizens can use their national ID card.
Belfast and the Giant's Causeway are in Northern Ireland — part of the United Kingdom. The border between the two is invisible (no checkpoints) but different rules apply: GBP currency, UK entry requirements, and from 2024 a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is required for many non-UK nationalities (cost: £10, valid 2 years).
Good news: EU/EEA citizens are exempt from the UK ETA. Irish citizens are never required. Most visitors to Dublin doing a day trip to Belfast just need to check if their nationality requires the UK ETA.
