Why do you need GBP in Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, not the Republic of Ireland. While the border is invisible and you can cross freely without passport checks (thanks to the Common Travel Area), the currency changes to British pounds (GBP) the moment you cross. Euros are not accepted in Belfast shops, pubs, or at Giant's Causeway.

Some border-area petrol stations and tourist spots occasionally accept euros at a poor rate — but don't count on it. Withdraw GBP from an ATM in Belfast city centre (Visa/Mastercard work fine) or exchange at a bureau before you leave Dublin.

Do I need a passport for Northern Ireland?

Technically the Common Travel Area means no passport is required for Irish and UK citizens crossing the border. However, we strongly recommend bringing your passport for ID purposes, especially if you're a non-EU/non-UK visitor. US, Canadian and Australian citizens need to check UK ETA requirements — use our Ireland entry checker for details.
